Obscura Day Summer 2025: Hiking the Blue Ridge Mountains

Obscura Day is an Atlas Obscura tradition where the whole team takes a day off to explore—whether it’s a nearby hidden gem or a distant, wondrous site. Check out the places our team visited.

Johanna Mayer, Senior Producer

I was in North Carolina for a music festival, so I decided to explore some of the nearby natural wonders in the jaw-dropping Blue Ridge Mountains. After hiking through mountain laurel-draped trails, we headed to Blowing Rock—a jagged cliff that towers 4,000 above sea level and is the product of 250 million years of mountain building and erosion. According to legend, the winds at Blowing Rock are so strong that if you were to jump off the edge, you’d be blown right back to the cliffside. We didn’t test it out!
